School Messenger Sept. 30, 2014 Good day. This is Dr. Wheeler and Mr. Liles with a couple of school announcements. Interim Progress Reports: Teachers are sending home interim reports today that will outline how your child is performing in school. Unfortunately, there have been problems with the electronic PowerSchool system. Teachers will hand correct any errors on the printed reports. Please know that the corrections have been made by your teacher and the correct grades are filed. Flex Reading Groups: We ran pilot flex reading groups for Kindergarten through second grade students today. Initial placements may change as the teachers learn more about your individual child’s skills and learning needs. We will send home information about your child’s current flex reading group in our next Tuesday Folder. Please look for it. Our K-2 flex reading program is designed to work on reading fluency and spelling. Students will learn spelling skills as well as skills that will help them read quickly and accurately. We have many exciting events coming up. Please look for the soon to be published PTA newsletter, our online school calendar, and your weekly Tuesday Folders for event information. We look forward to seeing you at the upcoming school events. | |
School Messenger Sept. 19, 2014
Good afternoon. This is Dr. Wheeler and Mr. Liles with a few short school updates. Grounds Saturday Tomorrow morning, Saturday, Sept. 20th, is our first quarter School Grounds Day. Folks will be coming to the school to work together from 9 a.m. to 12. Several different tasks are planned. Tasks will be made fun as we mulch, seed, prune, weed, and spread soil in order to make our school grounds look well-cared for and beautiful. We hope to see many of you tomorrow at the Grounds Day Special. See you at 9 a.m.! Dismissal Procedures We have been studying our dismissal procedures. Changes are coming to make the entire process safer for students and easier and friendlier for families. Tupelo Honey Café How many of you have eaten at one of the well-known Tupelo Honey Cafes? We are excited because a restaurant branch is opening right here in Raleigh at our own neighborhood Cameron Village. You will be delighted to know that we will be starting a partnership with the new restaurant. Lucky us! There is interest in finding a community member who would like to a community partner liaison person and a community culinary educator. You would work directly with the primary chef and staff in building bridges into the community. If you are interested, please let Dr. Wheeler know by emailing her at [email protected]. Oh, and by the way, it is a paid position. We wish you a wonderful weekend and look forward to seeing tomorrow for Grounds Day. School Messenger – Sept. 10, 2014
Good Day Fred Olds Families, This is Dr. Wheeler and Mr. Liles with a few community updates. Classroom Changes: We have passed the tenth day of school and will begin restructuring to meet district guidelines. Dr. Wheeler will start making parent calls tonight to move students as needed into new rooms. If your child is going to be moved to another classroom situation, you will get a personal email or phone call sometime over the next few days. PTA Potluck: Our PTA is sponsoring a “Potluck in the Park”at Isabella Cannon Park for all Olds families. The event begins at 5:30 p.m. Families are bringing a dish to share and a donation for the school. The address is 2601 Kilgore Ave. Come and join the fun. We hope to see you there. Dismissal: We all need to work together to help our students dismiss in a safe and positive manner. Please listen to the dismissal calls and follow the guidelines that are in your Olds Elementary Parent Student Handbook. Lunchroom: Our lunchroom supervisors have started a new recognition system for our students. When the classes follow the PACK rules for the lunchroom, they can earn points toward an extra recess period. Also, parents have started eating lunch with their children at school. We encourage the parents to join us. Please follow the rules for lunch. You should eat with your child only when eating outside. Also, please do not let your child play on the playground until their class recess begins. Please enjoy the time talking with your child until his or her recess begins. Your help in these matters is greatly appreciated. This is Dr. Wheeler and Mr. Liles wishing you a wonderful day. School Messenger
